Patriotic Russian drama tells how a brave band of Bolshevik Regulars were joined by gallant Siberian Bolshevik guerrillas to save a strategically vital hill from falling into the hands of Japanese intervention forces and their White Russian lackeys during the Russian Civil War in 1921.

Some memorable scenes, especially one where the clever Communists turn the ice and snow of the hill against the yellow hordes charging up it. The film represented a major letdown for the Vasiliev brothers after their triumph of TCHAPAYEF four years earlier. Lev Sverdlin does an impressive job as

the Japanese commander. He later wrote that during his preparations for the part, he sat in a Leningrad restaurant and ate two meals in succession so he could keep watching a Japanese man at a nearby table eating. (In Russian; English subtitles.)
