Crawford arrives at her squalid homestead on the lam from gangsters, and a long flashback then relates why she turned to a life of crime. A frustrated housewife living with her parents and married to laborer Egan, she leaves the factory town after her child is killed in an accident,

becoming a cigar-store girl and meeting brilliant but boring Smith, an accounting wizard to whom she latches on and whom she pushes into an association with crime czar Brian, promising Smith marriage. But she becomes Brian's mistress, even though the underworld boss has an invalid wife. To smooth

out Crawford's rough edges, Brian hires a down-and-out socialite, Royle, who brings culture and polish to the ruthlessly ambitious housewife. But Brian is just as ruthless and uses Crawford, passing her off as a Texas heiress, to worm information from a west coast rival, Cochran. Both men shoot it

out after double-dealing with Crawford. Cochran is killed and Brian is about to shoot Crawford, but faithful Kent talks him out of it. Crawford flees into the night, driving her fur-wrapped body back to the shabby home where she began. At dawn, the story has come full circle and she sees Brian

outside, waiting. She swallows her fear, steps outside, and is shot down. But loyal Kent then shoots Brian to death. He clutches Crawford in his arms and at the fade-out it is not clear whether she will live or die. The acting here is excellent, and the story, though it seems patched together in

spots, bears a strong resemblance to the life and times of mob girl Virginia Hill, with Cochran doing a convincing Bugsy Siegel.
