This exciting war story is based on two books about the RAF's destruction of the Ruhr dams that supplied industrial Germany with the power to run huge factories in WW II. Scientist Barnes N. Wallis (Michael Redgrave) comes up with an idea of how to demolish the German war machine. The

dams are built in such a fashion that they could not be done in by the bombs of 1943, but Wallis conceives of a bomb that would be delivered low, skip along the water like a stone, and hit the dams in the middle. He tests his theory with golf and Ping-Pong balls, but no one can be certain of the

weapon's effectiveness until its use is attempted. It must be dropped from a height of 60 feet by a plane traveling exactly 240 miles per hour and precisely 1,800 feet from the target. The job of training a crew to do so is taken on by Wing Comdr. Guy Gibson (Richard Todd); much of this absorbing

film has to do with that instruction. Since the story is based on real events, we know that Wallis' plan did work and marked an important turning point in the war effort. The film contains Oscar nominated special effects.
