An ultra-plotty mystery which nearly sinks in its complexities. An old English count who doubles as a spy meets up with a businessman who wants to smuggle gold into England in a giant cuckoo clock. The count agrees to help only if he can marry the smuggler's niece. The problem is that she

is in love with the sea captain who happened to bring the clock over on his ship. Everything is set to go, but in the morning the count is found dead inside the clock. The innocent captain is nearly convicted before the real culprit steps forward. The murderer, one of Napoleon's ex-soldiers, tells

the jury that the count uncovered a plot to get Napoleon out of his exile in Elba. In an attempt at realism, all of this takes place within a twenty-four-hour period, but too much talk and not enough mystery mars its chances.
