Z brought director Costa-Gavras to the public's eye and THE CONFESSION was a respectable follow-up in what has become a career of politically aware movies such as STATE OF SIEGE, SPECIAL SECTION, and MISSING. THE CONFESSION is a searing indictment of the excesses of Stalinism. This film

begins in 1951 when Montand is an East European Communist official who notices that he's being followed. During the Spanish Civil War, he had been a Loyalist. He mentions his fears to some friends who also served that cause and they admit that they too are being watched. He is soon arrested and

taken to a makeshift jail. His wife, Signoret (in reel and real life), is not told his whereabouts but she is falsely reassured that it will all be over shortly. Meanwhile Montand has not been informed of the reason for his imprisonment and must endure psychological torture from his inquisitors as

they try to extract a confession. Montand is a dedicated Communist and takes solace that these men are also Communists and only doing what they feel is right. He eventually finds himself in a well-publicized show trial.

Born in Greece, Costa-Gavras (Konstantin Gavras) is now a naturalized Frenchman and married to daring journalist Michele Ray, who excited the world with her dispatches from Vietnam and her account of being held captive by the Viet Cong.
