Based on a novel by Mario Vargas Llosa, this engrossing tale of shifting loyalties and revenge is set in the volatile, rigidly codified world of a boys' military academy. The unofficial leaders among the students are called "The Circle," a powerful unit that trades in contraband. Another

boy (Pablo Serra), known as "The Poet," has found his niche, writing love letters and erotic stories for his classmates and is the only confidante--although an untrustworthy one--of "The Slave" (Eduardo Adrianzen), a cowardly scapegoat. When the latter is killed under mysterious circumstances, the

stage is set for a confrontation between The Poet and leader of The Circle (Juan Manuel Ochoa) with dire results for the brutal army official who oversees the boys' activities (Gustavo Bueno).

Producer-director Francisco J. Lombardi's portrayal of the boys' daily discipline is as unflinching as any of the boot camp scenes in FULL METAL JACKET. The film is especially compelling in its examination of the multifaceted nature of honor. Aided by his first-rate ensemble, Lombardi succeeds in

giving a strong sense of underlying tension.
