Some 30 years ago, Ross Bagdasarian, Sr. came up with a multimillion-dollar idea when he speeded up voices on a record and called the resulting creation "The Chipmunks." Since then, many records have been pressed, and there have been movies, a TV series, and a variety of recordings

featuring the characters. Ross, Jr. has taken over, carrying on the family tradition, and the results are good. Dave Seville is sent abroad on a business trip, and the Chipmunks are rankled because he hasn't asked them along. They have to stay in the care of an old lady instead. The boys are rock

musicians (as in their TV show), always short of acorns and barely escaping trouble. When a female smuggler of precious stones happens across the Chipmunks and their friends the Chipettes, she uses the critters as unknowing couriers by placing the illegal gems in toy dolls and challenging the

trios to a round-the-globe race. Thus begins a world tour. Though the animation isn't spectacular, the music is definitely a cut above that of most children's films, and the voice work is simply excellent. The slick score includes "Witch Doctor," "Come On-a My House," "Diamond Dolls," "The Girls

of Rock and Roll," and "Wooly Bully."
