Charrier is a Paris student from a good family who falls in with a group of youths headed by Parisy. The two go out of their way to defy convention, both moral and social. After sleeping with Parisy, Charrier falls in love with Petit. She reciprocates; but since love is a bourgeois

sentiment rejected by their circle, they hide their feelings. Petit recruits Charrier for a blackmail scheme she has devised in order to buy herself an English sports car. Charrier hesitates but goes ahead with the plan. When he delivers the money to Petit, he finds her in bed with Terzieff.

Throwing the money on the bed, he walks out. Later Charrier and Petit meet at Parisy's and engage in a "truth" game. In an attempt to hurt Charrier, Petit tells the players that Terzieff is a much better lover than Charrier. Charrier in turn tells Petit that he never really loved her and that he

will marry Parisy. Petit is stunned and runs out to her car. Charrier runs after her, shouting that he cheated at the truth game. Before she can hear him, however, her car smashes into a gasoline truck, and she is killed. There are a couple of nice moments in this drama, but overall it's too long

and mostly boring. Carne made one great film, CHILDREN OF PARADISE, but everything after that--including this film--was downhill.
