In this truly frightening haunted-house story, the ghost of a murdered boy does the terrorizing. John Russell (George C. Scott) is a widowed music professor who moves into a historic Seattle mansion, only to learn that the house is haunted. With the help of local historical society worker

Claire (Trish Van Devere), Russell discovers that the spirit is a boy who was murdered by his father in an attempt to collect an inheritance. When the father realized that he could not collect the cash until his son became 21, he put a substitute--or changeling--in the murdered child's place.

Years later, the changeling has grown into a wealthy old industrialist (Melvyn Douglas), who thinks that Russell is trying to reveal his past and blackmail him. Directed with considerable flair by Peter Medak (THE RULING CLASS), this is a horror film made up of small moments that have lasting

impact, such as an old-fashioned wheelchair creaking down the hall on its own, and a chilling seance scene. One of the most genuinely haunting ghost stories in recent years, THE CHANGELING is much eerier and more effective than the overrated and bombastic POLTERGEIST.
