THE CARE BEARS MOVIE, like other animated children's films of its ilk, is a double-edged sword. On one hand, this is perfect viewing for three- to six-year-olds, while at the same time it is little more than a 75-minute advertisement for the vast array of Care Bears toys and products. In

the Cherrywood orphanage, Mr. Cherrywood (voiced by Mickey Rooney) reads the children a bedtime story about the land of Care-A-Lot, an ethereal place where Care Bears live. Two orphaned siblings, Kim and Jason, are whisked off to Care-A-Lot. Nicholas, another little boy, works as an assistant to a

carnival magician. He is lonely and willing to do anything for friendship. An evil spirit, who is locked in a book of black magic, promises numerous friends for Nicholas if the boy will help release him. Nicholas does so and is soon under the evil spirit's will, as it sets out to remove all care

and feeling from the world. The Care Bears, along with Kim and Jason, decide to take on the forces of evil and prepare themselves for the quest. The story unfolds simply, with respect for its young viewers and their view of the world. The animation is bright and colorful, with lively characters

that will surely delight children.
