The tragic story of three sisters who might have been invented by Chekhov had they not actually lived. This picture, like most films about writers, is boring. How is a director supposed to show a brilliant writer creating? Chew the pencil, tear paper up, and toss it in the trash? What does

a writer do that would be interesting to see? Hemingway lived a wild life; so did Fitzgerald. In that, they are characters. But the three Bronte sisters sat around, argued with their father, doted on their brother, wrote a few good books, and died too early. Charlotte, author of Jane Eyre, lived

to be all of 39--and she was the last one to go. Emily barely made 30, and Anne didn't survive tuberculosis at 29. As with so many writers, their work was more intriguing than their lives. THE BRONTE SISTERS accurately re-creates the period, looks lovely, and sheds no new light on the subject.

Read the many biographies if you're that interested. Better yet, read their novels. Instead of rebelling against their existences, the Brontes wrote about it. The parallel of their lives, both real and fantasy, with their literary output is the most fascinating part of their tale.
