Popular matador Ferrer begins to doubt his prowess in the ring after a near-fatal attack by a bull. Quinn, his cunning manager, convinces the champion to continue fighting, using the pretty Miroslava to bolster him. Unaware that Miroslava is Quinn's girlfriend, Ferrer begins to fall for

her and tries to impress her by returning to the arena. After a tragic accident, Ferrer's world collapses and he loses all faith in himself. Labeled a coward by the press and the public, he nonetheless makes an appearance at younger brother Iglesias' first fight with a bull where Fate once again

steps in to change his life.

An excellent film that takes on the difficult subjects of masculine pride, fear, jealousy, and death and handles them in an intelligent, humane manner. Quinn is outstanding as the tough and greedy, though vulnerable, manager who places his faith in Ferrer's spirit. Ferrer gives his

bullfighter a complexity, integrity, and sadness that makes his shift from coward to hero all the more remarkable. The ambiance of Mexico is captured with a clear passion by director Rossen and talented cinematographer James Wong Howe. The photography of the bullfighting sequences effectively

displays the hot, grimy, violent intensity of the situation.

Two sad notes are associated with this film: the intriguing Czechoslovakian actress Miroslava's suicide soon after the film's release and the victimization of director Rossen by the McCarthy anticommunist hearings. After it became labeled as the product of a "Red," the film never found its

deserved audience.
