A realistic adaptation of McGrath's play as directed by veteran TVer Jack Gold. Warner is a young, indecisive corporal about to take an officer's course. Williamson is a half-mad Irishman who drinks the way Dylan Thomas did before he died of it. Warner's job is to guard the rebel, who

wants to humiliate the young man and make certain he will never achieve promotion. Williamson commits suicide before the morning inspection, in hopes that Warner will be blamed. The film took lots of shots at the British military, and it is not surprising that the filmmakers received absolutely no

help in shooting it. This film is brimming with salty dialog that smacks of absolute truth and some flawless acting. A trifle lengthy at 105 minutes and not as emotionally engaging as one might wish.
