This multistoried film weaves a common thread through each tale: the effect of sudden, overwhelming crises on the lives of common folk. The first vignette takes place in WW II Poland. Hoping to save the archives of a film studio, the caretaker humbly hands over his daughter to a Nazi

soldier. In another story of unexpected change, a little girl survives after her parents are tragically killed in a car wreck. Next there is a businessman for whom the business of traveling becomes an all-consuming matter. The last two stories involve, first, a family overtaken by their devotion

to a home computer and, finally, the title character. In the concluding vignette madness reigns supreme, as a nearly sightless filmmaker drives those around him crazy with his current project. Kluge is notable for his contributions to the rise of the New German Cinema movement, yet this work is

largely disappointing. It is an often self-indulgent piece that never really connects its theme from story to story. The use of an intrusive narrator--who pops in randomly to explain things when it all gets a little confusing--is more annoying than effective. (In German; English subtitles.)
