While not quite the monstrosity it might be, this slight, occasionally diverting attempt to cross film noir with sentimental comedy doesn't wear its mixed heritage lightly. Devoted Tanya (Lara Flynn Boyle) works nights as a

bartender in L.A.'s Highland Park to support embittered, abusive husband Henry (Luca Bercovici), whose baseball career was scuttled by a knee injury. Meanwhile, sweet-natured Jesse (Danny Nucci), a local gardener, worships Tanya from afar. When Tanya learns that Henry's surreptitiously squirreled

away a $130,000 insurance settlement, she enlists the services of sleazy grifter Benny (Peter Dobson) to make sure she gets it. Benny dupes Jesse into helping them pull off an elaborate scam designed to liberate Henry from his cash. But Tanya falls for Jesse, and the usual round of double-crosses

ensue. Trouble is, it's all too darned good-natured to be noir, and the convoluted plot keeps you from getting involved with any of the characters -- you're too busy trying to keep the whos, whats and to-whoms straight to care. The film may come on like DOUBLE INDEMNITY, but in its heart it really

just wants to be THE RAINMAKER.
