While they were making THE BIG POND at the Astoria studio in New York, they were also shooting the French version LA GRANDE MER, and, believe it or not, the second one was better. Chevalier always felt more at home in his native tongue (who can blame him?) and the evidence is apparent in

the former version. Maurice is a poor but honorable tour guide working in Venice who falls in love with heiress Claudette Colbert. Her father, Barbier, and her fiance, Lyon, would like to get rid of this guy, but Claudette's mother, Ballou, shares her daughter's fascination with Chevalier. The men

are convinced Maurice is a fortune hunter, but he is given a job at old man Billings' gum factory. He works so hard that he can barely function at her nightly soirees, and this apparently bolsters her father's contention that he really cares little for her. Maurice continues work in the chewing

gum factory until he accidentally drenches some gum with rum and races to the office where he convinces Billings to manufacture the new discovery. Earlier in the film, Maurice had sung a love song to Claudette, and, now that he has to write the ads for the new product, he borrows from himself,

changes the words, and uses the same melody for the rum-gum jingle. Are you still there? Claudette is miffed at the commercialization of "their song" and vows to run off and marry Lyons. Maurice wakes up in time to kidnap the willing Claudette, and they take off on a combination business and

honeymoon trip.

The movie features four songs, including Chevalier's favorite: "You Brought a New Kind of Love to Me." Chevalier's performance earned him an Academy Award nomination, one of two he garnered for the year (the other was for THE LOVE PARADE), but he lost to George Arliss for DISRAELI.
