Strange but true: An all-star clambake comes out spoiled. Dorothy Wyndham (Dorothy Lamour) bails her boyfriend, radio announcer Buzz Fielding (Bob Hope), out of jail where he's languishing for failure to pay alimony to not one, but three ex-wives, in time to board the S. S. Gigantic. The Gigantic and the S. S. Colossal are debarking simultaneously on a race from New York to Cherbourg, France. The Colossal is delayed by the accident-prone S.B. Bellows (W.C. Fields), whose brother, T. Frothingill Bellows (also Fields), is president of the line that owns the rival Gigantic; once the Colossal is at sea S.B. manages to break the ship's turbine engine, invented by passenger Bob Hayes (Leif Erickson). Buzz is broadcasting from aboard the Gigantic during the race, and stands to profit handsomely if the Gigantic wins. Bob and Dorothy fall in love behind Buzz's back, while Buzz and his ex-wife Grace (Grace Bradley) meet up and realize they still love each other. S.B.'s daughter, Martha (Martha Raye), who's inherited her dad's klutz gene, is rescued at sea and wreaks havoc aboard the Gigantic. The Gigantic eventually wins the race "by a nose" and everyone's love lives are put in order. Fields doesn't get enough to do, though Hope's trademark song, "Thanks for the Memory," won an Oscar. High point to obscurity: diva Kirsten Flagstad sings "Die Walkure."
