Overly complex and glossy soap opera with several stories going at once. Crawford (she of the wide shoulders) is a tough businesswoman editing a number of readables and having an affair with a married man we never see. There's a little of Ginger Rogers in LADY IN THE DARK as well as Helen

Gurley Brown in SEX AND THE SINGLE GIRL here. Her frustrated sex life causes her to wreak havoc on her employees. A lot of smarminess and cheating is featured in this thin story. Hyer is having an affair with Harron, who is also married. Baker becomes pregnant by Evans, who suggests she get rid of

the baby with an illegal operation. (Evans went on to become the very successful producer of CHINATOWN, among other films.) Parker is having it away with Jourdan, who tosses her out to take up with Hansen. Have you had enough yet? Well, it goes on and on. Wald, the producer (who supposedly was the

inspiration for Schulberg's What Makes Sammy Run?) loved this kind of movie and did it once before with PEYTON PLACE. He and director Negulesco had greater success a few years before with JOHNNY BELINDA. The major problem with THE BEST OF EVERYTHING is that so much is happening, there's no time

for any development of characters. The song got an Oscar nomination for Newman and Cahn, who also won Oscars for "All the Way," "Call Me Irresponsible," "High Hopes," and "Three Coins in the Fountain." THE BEST OF EVERYTHING was also nominated for Best Costume Design.
