This was the first entry in the Mexican mummy series (THE CURSE OF THE AZTEC MUMMY and THE ROBOT VS. THE AZTEC MUMMY followed). All of the films in the series were directed by Rafael Lopez Portillo, starred Ramon Gay, and were released in 1957. Having hypnotized his lover, Flor (Rosita

Arenas), and discovered that in a past life she was an Aztec princess killed for having an illicit affair with the warrior Popoca, Dr. Almada (Gay) and his assistant (Crox Alvarado) attempt to uncover the princess' tomb. Popoca, who was buried with the princess, is revived and recognizes Flor as

his ancient lover. Add yet another villain, the masked and evil Dr. Krupp (Luis Aceves Casteneda), and you've got one of the strangest mummy movies ever made. Completely bizarre and cheaply made, the Mexican mummy series isn't exactly high quality, but these films are certainly engaging and well

worth a look for those with a taste for the offbeat.
