An expertly crafted suspense film that is too often overlooked. Deborah Kerr, making her fifth feature at age 24, appears as an Irish spitfire who has been weaned on her grandfather's tales of British cruelty to the Irish; she leaves her small village of Ballygarry, spouting anti-British

venom to a stranger, Huntley, on board a train to Dublin, where the IRA rejects her. But Huntley, a Nazi agent, uses her as a pawn, telling her that he represents another branch of the movement and involving her in the rescue of "one of the lads" imprisoned in a British jail--in reality, another

Nazi spy. Howard, as a British intelligence agent, tracks her down and falls in love with her, staying a step behind through one perilous adventure after another, both to protect her and to uncover the Nazi spy ring. This is a highly suspenseful, atmospheric film in the Hitchcock tradition with a

sophisticated script by Launder and Gilliat, who authored THE LADY VANISHES. The acting, particularly by Kerr (who won the 1947 New York Film Critics Award for this role and her appearance in BLACK NARCISSUS), Howard, and Huntley, is outstanding.
