This kid-toon discloses the hard knocks awaiting the extremely height-challenged, perhaps inadvertently echoing the Randy Newman song "Short People."
The families of Tom Thumb (voice of Elijah Wood) and his neighbor, Thumbelina (Jennifer Love Hewitt), both live in a miniature village, but neither can prevent the kidnapping of their tiny offspring by full-sized human invaders. Tom makes his getaway and finds refuge with Ben the Blacksmith, but the less fortunate Thumbelina winds up the star performer in Mr. Roman's carnival. Thumbelina eventually escapes, bidding farewell to her fellow artistes (a mouse and a monkey), but goes from the frying pan into the fire. In short order, she's blackballed by gossipy beetles and accosted by moles seeking a bride for their king (Peter Gallagher). Tom Thumb decides to make his own way in the forest and runs into Thumbelina, but their reunion is short-lived. Dragged off to the mole lair, Thumbelina prepares to marrying into a monarchy that's seen better days, but is befriended by a sparrow named Albertine (Rachel Griffiths), who flies her to freedom. Unfortunately, a child scientist (Jack Johnson) scoops her up and she joins Tom Thumb and the beetles in captivity in the youngster's laboratory. When the budding bug collector starts preserving his specimens, Thumbelina gives him a taste of his own anesthetic. Her kind-hearted decision to free some lab mice proves providential, because they later help her ward off her unwanted fiance, the royal mole. With the mice and Albertine pitching in, Tom Thumb and Thumbelina return to their old neighborhood and are reunited with their families. The little love-doves encounter one more obstacle Thumbelina is betrothed to another but true love, no matter how microscopic, does conquer all. The biggest surprise here is the generic nature of the tunes, which are penned by musical comedy maverick William (Falsettos) Finn. Aside from this tuneful disappointment, this jaunty fable offers ample merriment for youngsters fond of these famous fairy tales
