A fairly faithful adaptation of Daniel Defoe's classic The Life and Strange Surprising Adventures of Robinson Crusoe, directed by Bunuel in Mexico. Shipwrecked in a storm, sailor Robinson Crusoe (Dan O'Herlihy) finds himself washed up on the shore of a desert island. All other hands have

been killed in the storm, but Crusoe is able to salvage a cat, a dog, and some weapons and provisions from the wreckage. He takes up residence in a cave and begins living as his prehistoric ancestors must have done, all the while striving to overcome his oppressive loneliness. After going 18 years

without seeing another human being, he is shocked when a small band of natives visits the island one day. They are about to kill and eat one of their party when Crusoe intervenes, saves the intended victim, and chases off the others. The two develop a strong relationship as they spend another ten

years on the island, after which Crusoe is finally returned to civilization by the crew of a ship that anchors offshore.

Bunuel's adaptation is particularly effective in evoking the loneliness of the stranded survivor and in depicting the changes that gradually occur within him as his memories of civilization begin to fade. O'Herlihy earned an Academy Award nomination for his performance, but lost to Marlon Brando

for ON THE WATERFRONT.
