Boer commando Hawkins, after the South African war in 1902, comes across a corpse wearing a pouch brimming with diamonds. Thinking the war is still on and that he might be taken captive and the gems confiscated, Hawkins buries the treasure and stumbles back to civilization, where he

learns peace has been declared. He enlists the aid of a disgruntled bartender, Aslan, another young Boer, Hammond, and a cashiered British officer, Price, who finances the expedition to the outback to retrieve the buried diamonds. En route, the greedy bunch falls out and attacks one another,

Hawkins murdering the haughty Englishman. The obsessed Hawkins then chases Hammond through a deserted gold mine, where a cave-in finishes the killer, a handy retribution. Hawkins is powerful as the rugged Boer, Price is convincing as the aristocratic British victim, and Hammond is annoying as the

apprentice Boer. McKenna's part as Hawkins' wife is a throwaway role. It is apparent that this production takes much from THE TREASURE OF THE SIERRA MADRE and from von Stroheim's silent classic GREED but it is nevertheless an often-gripping film.
