Hilarious spoof of all the Holmes film adventures by director-writer Wilder, who also stars as the utterly berserk younger brother of the great sleuth, consumed by jealousy over his brother's fame, detective acumen, and mere presence in the same country. The obsessively quirkish Wilder

must outdo his brother in everything, from fencing to inventions, from detecting the smallest clue to unraveling the most fiendish plot. In this case, he's tracking down some vital state secrets that are missing and are about to fall into the clutching hands of, naturally, the evil Professor

Moriarty, devilishly and deftly played by McKern. Aiding the outlandishly courageous Wilder is wild-eyed Feldman, a Scotland yard detective with photographic hearing, and a mystery woman thrown in for witty non sequiturs (Kahn, in all her voluptuous pomp and puff). We tumble along with Wilder from

one harrowing adventure to another as he draws ever nearer to the urgent papers, almost undone by mad opera star DeLuise, a total hedonist whose onstage braying and prancing guarantees theatrical disaster. Wilder doggedly manages his job as a wholly side-splitting maniac only to be exposed as a

decoy set up by his omnipotent brother (Wilmer), who has just pretended to be out of the country and has been operating behind the scenes with the venerable Watson (Walters) to save Wilder repeatedly from death and/or destruction. Both Holmes brothers triumph, as does this film, a portrait of

delightful mayhem.
