Before director Robert Altman went on to gain fame for films like M*A*S*H and NASHVILLE, he directed this grim, uneven film. The work stars Dennis as a wealthy, lonely spinster approaching middle age, who finds a mysterious young man, Burns, sitting on a park bench in the rain. She invites

him in, and he accepts without a word. She assumes he is a mute and lets him spend the night. A strange relationship develops between the two, with Dennis pampering Burns, barely concealing her sexual attraction, in contrast to his silent, uncaring acceptance. Eventually Dennis goes to offer

herself to him, but he has sneaked out of the apartment. Enraged, she waits until he returns and then locks him in, keeping him prisoner. Burns finally speaks, telling her that he never sought or wanted her help. Not wanting to lose him, Dennis hires a prostitute for his pleasure. During their

tryst, Dennis invades the room and stabs the girl to death. Horrified, Burns sits helplessly, while a maddened Dennis passionately hugs him.
