A standard but well-crafted Holmes entry which places him on an express train speeding through the countryside from London to Edinburgh. On board is the owner of the cursed Star of Rhodesia diamond, the kind of gem that kills whoever possesses it. Of course, the owner is killed as are a couple of others. Holmes (Rathbone) gets to the bottom of the case once he discovers that the coffin being transported in the baggage car has a false bottom, creating a secret chamber where the killer had been hiding. This next-to-last Holmes film for Rathbone and Bruce is a nicely executed mystery blessed by a decent

script and solid supporting cast. A clever casting twist has Alan Mowbray who had played Scotland Yard detectives in two previous Sherlock Holmes films as the villain.
