A disappointing modernistic fantasy-drama, TEMPEST uses Shakespeare's comedy as a jumping-off point and then goes off into never-never land. Phillip (John Cassavetes), an architect married to Antonia (Gena Rowlands), an actress, takes their daughter, Miranda (Molly Ringwald in her debut),

to Greece where he meets a singer, Aretha (Susan Sarandon). The three move to a bleak Greek island where they encounter a hermit, Kalibanos (Raul Julia). All the people in Phillip's life--Antonia, her producer (Paul Mazursky), casino owner Alfonso (Vittorio Gassman), his son (Sam Robards), as well

as a few others--land on the island when their boat is shipwrecked.

The film roams all over the place emotionally and never settles into being much of anything. Apart from a few funny moments, the whole idea is pretentious and overloaded with intellectualism. It goes a long way around to show that having a mid-life crisis is tough. For its $13 million budget, the

movie looks excellent, however. Australian cinematographer Donald McAlpine gave it better treatment than it deserved. Comedian Jackie Gayle makes an appearance and shows that he's not just another funny face. The best part of the movie is the storm sequence, but audiences could get the same effect

by watching Midwestern tornadoes on the TV news.
