It was a long three-year wait for audiences who hadn't seen a decent TARZAN adventure since TARZAN ESCAPES. (Other non-Weissmuller-O'Sullivan cheapies had cropped up in the meantime, but the public knew this one would shine above its competitors.) The film has the Tarzan clan growing with

the addition of Sheffield, a 5-year-old orphan. (The Hays Code wouldn't allow Tarzan and Jane to have their own offspring--remember, they weren't married.) It seems that Sheffield's relatives are hoping he's dead so that they can receive a hefty inheritance. When they learn he's living with

Weissmuller and O'Sullivan and practicing survival techniques, they aren't pleased. Eventually the jungle family is captured by a wicked tribe. Sheffield escapes, however, calls the stampeding elephants, and saves the day. Originally this entry had O'Sullivan dying in the final minutes, heeding

the actress' wishes to break off her six-picture contract. Burroughs, however, wouldn't permit MGM to kill any of his characters, so the ending had to be reshot. MGM coughed up some more cash and O'Sullivan suffered through two more jungle extravaganzas.
