TALES OF MANHATTAN follows the adventures of a fancy tail coat as it goes from riches to rags. A famous actor (Charles Boyer) initially buys the coat, only to be told the garment carries a curse. Later, it winds up with a man (Cesar Romero) whose fiancee (Ginger Rogers) finds a love

letter in one of the pockets. He insists the coat belongs to his pal (Henry Fonda), but his strategy backfires when, impressed by the letter's passion, she runs off with the friend. The cursed jacket then passes from a composer (Charles Laughton) to an impoverished lawyer (Edward G. Robinson), who

wears it to a college reunion, where three former classmates decide to help him get back on his feet. Next to own the garment is a crook (J. Carrol Naish) who wears it while he pulls off a job. Pocketing the loot, he boards a plane, but during the flight he throws the coat out the window,

forgetting it's stuffed with $40,000. The money flutters to the ground and is picked up by two sharecroppers (Paul Robeson and Ethel Waters) who take it to the local preacher, while the coat ends up on a scarecrow. TALES OF MANHATTAN unfolds with charm. Under the fine direction of Julien Duvivier

(who directed the similarly episodic UN CARNET DU BAL, 1938), the episodes flow smoothly. It has, however, been criticized for its simplistic presentation of blacks in the final episode, and Robeson later denounced the film. Also unfortunate is that what might have been the best sequence,

featuring W.C. Fields, didn't make the final cut.
