A realistic portrayal of drug addicts trying to kick the habit is obtained by Quine and company through the use of the actual rehabilitation house which served as the inspiration for the film, Synanon House in Santa Monica, California. Cord, an ex-con unable to conform to the strict rules

of the center, quickly initiates an affair with the former prostitute, Stevens, assigned to watch over his recovery. This arouses the jealousies of fellow inmate Connors, whose impingement upon the couple forces them to flee from the house. However Cord is not fully cured of his addiction and

seeks out more junk as soon as the need arises. He dies from an overdose in a sleazy hotel room, and Stevens goes back to continue with her own treatment. A realistic atmosphere is achieved through semi-documentary-type techniques; this adds to the effectiveness in portraying the troubles of an

addict trying to reform. In a commendable performance, O'Brien plays the former alcoholic, Charles Dederich, who opened the house despite the hostility of the local citizens. Some of the actual residents of Synanon House also appear in the film.
