Aboard a chartered yacht a group of wealthy northern Italians discuss a variety of topics while basking in the sun. The snobbish Melato takes particular delight in taunting Giannini, a Sicilian deckhand, ridiculing his smelly shirt and communist ideology. Surely, Giannini is the last man

on earth Melato would ever want to be shipwrecked with on a desert isle. SWEPT AWAY is a wild romp and certainly lives up to its elongated title. When destiny does indeed shipwreck the two, none of Melato's arrogance can keep this two-person war between the sexes and classes from taking some

passionately amorous turns. Director-screenwriter Lina Wertmuller's 11th film (the fourth to gain a US release) provoked much controversy for what many perceived as a reactionary, sexist treatment of Melato's role by Wertmuller, a self-described feminist. (One beating scene goes on for a long

time.) The argument has merit, although it ignores the broadness of Wertmuller's treatment here of some of her favorite themes. Gender and class politics are ever-present throughout the story, but laced with a delightfully satiric bite that provokes laughter as well as thought. Giannini and Melato

are perfectly matched as the combatants/lovers, providing a chemistry that lends Wertmuller's parable some degree of naturalism and honesty. With lesser actors the story might never have worked, and it certainly wouldn't have made such a splash at the box office.
