The scene here is Chile in September 1973, during the Rightist military coup that followed the assassination of President Salvador Allende. SWEET COUNTRY explores the emotional turmoil that befalls an American couple living under military rule. Beginning in New York at the screening of a

smuggled documentary, the story flashes back to Chile in 1973, after Anna Willing (Jane Alexander), an American who lived in Chile during the political upheaval, is injured by a bomb that goes off in the theater. The film then depicts the intrigue that she and her university professor husband, Ben

(John Cullum), became involved in when they began taking sides against the junta. A talky, uninvolving movie, SWEET COUNTRY has more than its share of problems and never approaches the level of intensity attained by such films as Costa-Gavras' STATE OF SIEGE (which also deals with the Chilean

situation); Z; or MISSING. While the story (scripted by director Michael Cacoyannis from a novel by Caroline Richards) is potentially explosive, the picture's uneven pacing and the over-the-top histrionics of the horribly miscast performers undermine its value. Randy Quaid plays his leering

military policeman with all the subtlety of a "Saturday Night Live" sketch. He is simply in the wrong movie, whereas Alexander fares better. In English.
