Actors have played the same role in more than one movie. Cagney did George M. Cohan in YANKEE DOODLE DANDY and THE SEVEN LITTLE FOYS. Edward Arnold played Diamond Jim Brady in DIAMOND JIM and LILLIAN RUSSELL. This was the first time Brennan played this role, then he did it again in a

total remake of this picture called LURE OF THE WILDERNESS, a rare item in cinema history. It was Renoir's first U.S. picture, a difficult assignment because the story had to do with an area and a collection of people who were not familiar to most Americans. Brennan has been falsely accused of a

murder, tried, convicted, and sent to jail. He's escaped and taken refuge in the overgrown swamps of Georgia. He was to be hanged but fought his way out and is determined to bring the real culprit to justice. But first, he has to make himself scarce. Andrews is Huston's oldest son. He is out

searching for his lost hound when he meets the fugitive Brennan. The escapee fears that Andrews will turn him in and there's a tense moment as Brennan thinks about killing Andrews. Then Brennan tells Andrews how he was railroaded and Andrews believes him. The two men begin trapping animals for

their pelts, with Brennan handling the snares and Andrews selling the furs. Brennan has told Andrews to give his share of the proceeds to his daughter, Baxter. Andrews has been seeing Gilmore, who knows what's going on. When she believes that Andrews is falling for Baxter, Gilmore tells the

authorities of Brennan's hideout and Andrews is questioned, but refuses to give away the information. Andrews is now enamored of Baxter and solves the crime when he learns that the testimony against Brennan was perjury to protect the true killers of the man Brennan was supposed to have slain. Now

that he's cleared, Brennan is taken out of the tangled vegetation and marshy waterways and brought back to civilization. Renoir's direction and Marley's moody camera are superior to the dialog from Nichols, who was one of the best screenwriters around but failed to put much down on paper for this

one.
