Last Summer: Review

An interesting and daring "youth film" from the 1960s, LAST SUMMER focuses on a group of teenagers who are practically abandoned by their parents on New York's Fire Island. The teens get drunk, play the revealing game "truth or dare," smoke pot, and experiment with sex. A rivalry builds between the promiscuous Hershey and the shy Burns, with Hershey taking off her bikini top and daring Burns to do the same. Hershey then helps the boys hold Burns down while one of them rapes her. A brutal film, as well as an insightful one, LAST SUMMER was given an X rating when it was first released, but after some cuts were made, the film's rating was amended to an R by the MPAA. Burns was nominated for an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
