A close friendship between two women is tested over the course of a single sultry Berlin summer in this bittersweet and wonderfully wry film from German director Andreas Dresen. Katrin Engel (Inka Friedrich) is a 39-year-old divorcee who, after the failure of her marriage to her East German husband, moved to Berlin where she's now raising her son, Max (Vincent Redetzki), and looking for work as a window dresser. Nicole "Nike" Pawelski (Nadja Uhl) is a homecare attendant who spends her days visiting with her elderly and housebound clients, gamely changing their diapers, feeding them lunch, listening to their endlessly repeated stories and, as in the case of Helene (Christel Peters), reading to them from torrid romance magazines. Katrin and Nike's only respites from this dreary business of day-to-day life are the evenings they spend together on Nike's balcony, drinking the night away and making prank phone calls to the pharmacist down the street or Katrin's ex-husband. But as close as they are, their companionship isn't enough: Katrin and Nike are both looking for a good man, and Nike thinks she's found one in Ronald (Andreas Schmidt), a gangly, tattooed truck driver who nearly ran down Katrin one afternoon while she was crossing the street. Ronald is clearly no great prize and out for whatever he can get out of Nike, but when within a just few days of their first "date" he asks to move in. Nike, declaring her love, agrees. Katrin, meanwhile, is having a hard time finding both work — interviews often end with a "We'll be in touch" — or a lover, and she's not exactly thrilled when Nike announces her future plans for Ronald. Her reaction leads to a spat with Nike, and a drunken evening with a stranger that ends very badly. Far from the gloss, glamour and the utter fantasies about the lives of single women that are regularly peddled on shows like Sex & the City, Dresen and veteran screenwriter Wolfgang Kohlhasse's (THE LEGEND OF RITA) film is a bracing dose of reality. It's beautifully acted and executed both with humor and heart.
