In 1566 Suleiman the Magnificent (Gizzi), ruler of the Ottoman Empire, which threatens to overwhelm all of Europe, rejects the advice of his Grand Vizier (Purdom) that he besiege Vienna. Instead, he chooses an easier target, the isolated Christian fortress town of Szigetvar commanded by

Potokar. During the siege, Gizzi dies of a stroke, but the news of his death is suppressed by Purdom, who slaughters those who have witnessed it. Within the fortress, jealousy and intrigue reign among the defenders. Farnese, Potokar's lieutenant, orders Marin, his rival for the hand of Potokar's

daughter Moll, to undertake a dangerous race for Vienna to get reinforcements for the beleaguered Christians. Repulsed by Moll after Marin's departure, the evil Farnese turns his coat and joins the forces of Purdom. Returning from Vienna rebuffed in his request for troops, Marin is attacked by

Farnese, whom Marin kills. Potokar, informed by Marin of his rebuff, orders that all noncombatants be evacuated to safer surroundings. Then he leads a suicidal attack against the Turks. In victory, the Turks are exhausted and ill; they retreat from Austria. Marin and Moll lead the women and

children back to the now-secure fortress. This picture was filmed in Yugoslavia with a mixed cast and crew of Yugoslavians and Italians. Purdom, whose looks and resonant voice brought him leading-man roles in big-budget Hollywood costume epics early in his cinema career, filtered down to

foreign-made B-grade action costumers such as this one later on.
