A cheerleading team at Lincoln High, that is. Squad leader Diane (Marley

Shelton) lives life by a series of syrupy greeting-card mantras. Kansas (Mena

Suvari) is the tough girl, whose mom (Sean Young) is in jail for killing her

husband right before Kansas was born. Sultry Cleo (Melissa George) has a

wicked obsession with Conan O'Brien, Lucy (Sara March) is the brain and Hannah

(Rachel Blanchard) is the token Christian. Diana falls head over heels for

none-too-bright himbo Jack (James Marsden), the new football star (actually,

she's somersaulting head over heels and whacks him in the face, but he

doesn't mind) and in no time flat, they're the school's golden couple. Then

Diane gets pregnant. Tossed out by their disappointed parents, the young

lovers set up housekeeping in a grungy apartment. But while Jack's delighted

at the thought of being a husband and dad, Diane's perpetual optimism is soon

crumbling under the strain of being a pregnant high school student.

Inspiration strikes while the squad is watching POINT BREAK. If they robbed a bank, all their financial worries would be over. Kansas' mom hooks them up

with some shady associates, and the heist is on. But the girls weren't

counting on disgruntled, B-team cheerleader Lisa (Marla Sokoloff), who sees

past the Betty doll masks (guess Mattel didn't want Barbie associated with

lawbreakers) to the mysterious stick-up artists' real identities. Will she

blow their cover? Given its fundamental silliness, this candy-colored teen

picture is better than it needs to be. Some of the dialogue is razor sharp,

the girl band-heavy soundtrack is killer, and the image of the five

Betty-masked girls in black leotards (complete with identical pregnant

bellies) and American-flag capes, guns hidden in flower boxes, striding toward

the bank to the strains of The Breeders' "Cannonball" is a keeper.
