Writer John Howard Lawson was one of the blacklisted "Hollywood Ten" (the group of movie people convicted of contempt of Congress for refusing to reveal past political associations before the House Committee on Un-American Activities), and this film shows his total disdain for and disgust

with capitalism. Fairbanks is after the American dream--success--and nothing will stop him on his way to the top. He has no feeling for anyone or anything as he uses every trick in the book, legal or illegal, to make more and more money. But it all catches up with him and he sees suicide as the

only way to escape. He fails in his attempt to do himself in, but ends up with Moore (who has always been there for him) when he finally comes to his senses.
