A band of punk rockers in Los Angeles, alienated from their families and society for various reasons (incest, homosexuality, etc.), take over a house in an abandoned subdivision slated for demolition and set up a more or less conventional family structure there. Their neighbors, though,

are less than thrilled with the punks next door and organize into a sort of vigilante force to chase them out, a measure that meets with retaliation from the more imaginative punkers. Although hardly believable, the story is effective, making its rather unwholesome characters sympathetic. Given

the environments they're fleeing, it's no wonder they call themselves "The Rejected." Director Penelope Spheeris makes a critically acclaimed feature debut here, after she made the pioneering punk documentary THE DECLINE OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION (1981) and produced Albert Brooks' REAL LIFE

(1979).
