Jonathan Fisher (Reeve) is a magazine journalist who gets an assignment to write about the lifestyle of a pimp. When he can't get any real pimps to talk to him, Fisher creates a fictional portrait that is chosen as a cover story and turns him into a celebrity with his own TV news show.

Fisher then gets to know "Fast Black" (Freeman), a vicious, high-powered pimp who is being charged with murder. Meanwhile, an assistant D.A. comes to believe that Fast Black is the real-life subject of Fisher's article, and subpoenas the writer's (non-existent) notes as evidence in the trial. Fast

Black exerts pressure on Fisher to create false notes that will provide him with an alibi; Fisher resists, until he realizes how far the pimp will go to get what he wants.

Thanks to a terrific performance by Freeman and slick direction by Jerry Schatzberg, this is a fast-moving, intermittently riveting crime drama. Reeve is good as the naive writer who gets in over his head, and Kathy Baker is outstanding as one of Fast Black's "girls."
