This is a tale inspired by the story of gambler Arnold Rothstein, who was murdered amid a great deal of publicity. In this story, Toomey is a California cardplayer who comes into town thinking his brother Powell is a stockbroker. Powell is really the notorious "Natural" Davis, a gambler of

some repute. Powell is having marital troubles and swears off gambling to take a second honeymoon with his wife. However, he decides to gamble once more to keep Toomey from following in his footsteps. Powell plays a crooked deal to break his brother, but others lose money in the game and vow to

gain revenge. The final scene has Powell, Toomey, and the doctor riding in the back of an ambulance. The doctor says Powell will pull through. Powell offers 50-to-1 odds that he will not. The doctor says: "It's a bet." Powell dies. The film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Writing

Achievement. It was remade in 1937 as HER HUSBAND LIES.
