More aptly titled THE FORBIDDEN CHRIST, this stark prisoner of war drama casts Vallone as a brutish Italian soldier released from a Russian camp. Upon learning that his brother had been informed on and then killed, Vallone sets out to find the betrayer. Cuny, the village carpenter, takes

responsibility for the death and is killed by Vallone, who learns as the man is dying that he was actually innocent and merely sacrificing himself for the real informer. Vallone is stunned and, against the wishes of Cuny, continues his search, which leads to the frightened Lemaire, the real

betrayer. The Christ-like sacrifice of Cuny digs at Vallone, however, and he is unable to kill Lemaire. Heavy on religious symbolism, STRANGE DECEPTION is a remarkable achievement for Malaparte, the well-known Italian novelist who scripted and directed this film but never afterward equalled this

powerful success. (In Italian; English subtitles.)
