The directorial debut of Michael Laughlin, who had previously produced Monte Hellman's excellent TWO LANE BLACKTOP, is an intelligent little film starring Michael Murphy as the chief of police in a Midwestern town (though the film was shot in New Zealand) who is trying to solve a series of

teenage stabbings. The bloody trail leads to the local college where the science department is doing government research on the effects of mental conditioning. Interesting, suspenseful, and quite witty, STRANGE BEHAVIOR contains several strong performances, with Murphy as the sheriff, Fiona Lewis

as the head of the college science department, and Louise Fletcher as a concerned parent--all standouts. Director Laughlin also made the underrated science-fiction film STRANGE INVADERS (1983).
