As STRAIGHT TO THE HEART opens, Habich is a photojournalist working in Nicaragua, witnessing and recording several deaths that are apparently the contras' work. Finally shaken by the killing of a small boy and his father, he returns home to Canada and to the apartment he shares with his

lovers, Voita and Tremblay. The two men have deserted him and Habich falls into a state of depression that grows steadily worse. Lea Pool became one of Canada's better-known filmmakers on the strength of such films as ANNE TRISTER, and there is no doubt here that she is a talented technician.

Production values are high; the cinematography and camera movements are superb; but the story, while potentially compelling, comes off as boring. The performances are sensitive, but ultimately the whole film is dreadfully pretentious. (In French; English subtitles.)
