One of the most original films to come out of Germany in recent years, STRAIGHT THROUGH THE HEART is a debut feature that tells the story of Jensen, a lonely 20-year-old whose most visible act of rebellion is dying her hair blue. She is noticed by Bierbichler, a middle-aged dentist who

is selling off her late mother's possessions. He offers her a hefty stipend if she will come and live with him. Assuming that it will be easy money, Jensen agrees. Upon her arrival, however, she finds herself becoming increasingly involved psychologically with Bierbichler. It is not that he is

demanding of her, but the opposite. He wants nothing of her except her presence--the "life" that she adds to his otherwise empty atmosphere. She decides to make him love her, with no real success. He is kind to her, but it is not heartfelt. They even have sex, but it is only to appease Jensen.

Driven to her psychological end, Jensen takes their "relationship" to the extreme; by the film's end, murder is the result. Essentially a two-character absurdist drama, STRAIGHT THROUGH THE HEART is a look at the roles that men and women are forced to play in a relationship and the mental torture

that can and does arise. This film received a special screening in New York in 1984, but it wasn't seen throughout the country until 1985 (in some cities not until 1986). It is Dorrie's first feature and was followed by IM INNEREN DES WALS (INSIDE THE WHALE) and MEN, the latter of which received

critical and public praise in 1985. (In German; English subtitles.)
