One of the more disappointing offerings among 1988's welcome increase in films written and directed by women, this screwball affair focuses on a pair of female musicians, Hattie (Helen Slater) and Lolly (Melanie Mayron), trying to keep their heads above water in the Big Apple. Their

friendly dope dealer, Diane (Laura Devine), leaves a suitcase with them that contains nearly a million ill-gotten bucks. As fast as you can say "Shop, buy, accumulate," they've spent a quarter of a million dollars. After some complications with husbands and lovers, they hear from Diane, who is on

her way back to town. All the while both the police and the mob have been keeping an eye on them. STICKY FINGERS is presented with a certain panache, and its excellent costume and production design, make it visually interesting. Most of the dialog and action are goofy without being particularly

funny, however.
