Often the only thing worse than an actor who wants to direct is an actor who actually does, but actor-turned-writer/director Tom McCarthy's first feature is a sweet and genuinely quirky delight. Diminutive, asocial trainspotter Finbar McBride (Peter Dinklage) thinks his dream has come true when his late friend leaves him an rural, out-of-service train depot in his will, only to find that the his new life in the sticks comes complete with a gregarious snack-truck driver (Bobby Cannavale) and a grieving painter (Patricia Clarkson). First things first: A.C. Slater's got a nice ass! Did I ever think I'd type that anywhere? I suppose that's what you get when you spend most of your time Dancing with the Stars and being Bold & Beautiful. I think you'll all agree that Mario Lopez has aged quite well. Whether I buy him as a plastic surgeon is a different story. I did like that Mario's character, Dr. Mike, told Christian how he's able to look so good (besides working out every day): "I don't eat." And more dialogue I found extremely true: "I'm 33. Basic metabolic rates slow down every decade after 30." Tell me about it. I am always a Debbie Downer when my friends turn that age and I say to them "Happy 30th... get ready for back fat!" Cue Debbie Downer noise. "Thanks, Debbie." The first shot of Mario exercising at the gym was reminiscent of his Greg Louganis TV-movie.
