This charming, light-hearted specimen of British drawing-room comedy concentrates on characters over its wafer-thin plot. Neagle works as a secretary for her uncle, Walls, a very rich art collector. When the household acquires a new footman, Wilding, Neagle wonders what the new man is

doing in service; he seems far too cultivated and upper-class to be in this lowly position. As it turns out, Wilding is the son of a very rich family and temporarily in need of money to get him to New York. At the moment he's lying low, having sold his family's art collection to someone who gave

him a bad check and fearing that this blunder will put him in bad stead with his kin. Until he can straighten matters out, he's posing as a domestic. While the film sends up various character types incorporated into the motley household (such as egomaniacal movie people, Colonel Blimp-ish bores,

and authoritarian housekeepers), Wilding and Neagle, naturally, fall madly in love. What's more, the check he took turns out to be good after all.

Among the fine cast, Wilding is especially good, rolling out his character's many quips perfectly. The script is full of uproarious situations and bright wit, and the picture was the top moneymaker in Britain in its year of release there, 1948. Neagle, Britain's top star, was married to

producer-director Wilcox; SPRING IN PARK LANE is regarded as the best of many light comedies they produced together.
