A Japanese animated sci-fi spectacular that borrows heavily from STAR WARS. In the year 2199, Earth is suffering from the effects brought on by a lengthy and continuing war with the evil planet Gorgon. The Gorgons have used radical nuclear weapons, and the Earth is in the throes of

radiation poisoning. In order to search for an antidote, an old WW II battleship is brought up from the bottom of the sea, fitted with ultramodern equipment, then sent into space to find a cure for the fallout. The STAR WARS influence is felt through innumerable visual rip-offs and quite a few

character borrowings, including a cute little robot who proves himself a hero. There is a cult of fans for this picture, but while colorful and flashy, the film invariably suffers from an almost ridiculous amount of violence, purloined story lines, and bad dubbing into English. The film spawned

two sequels, SARABA UCHU SENKAN YAMATO (1978) and YAMATO YO TOWANO (1979).
