Melodrama about an English war hero who finds civilian life a sore disappointment, but sacrifices himself without complaint to better the life of his son. Well-born Capt. Stephen Sorrell (H.B. Warner) returns home from World War I with a Military Cross but few prospects, and the first

shock awaiting him is that his faithless wife Dora (Anna Q. Nilsson) is decamping with a wealthier man. Left to raise their small son Kit, Sorrell goes looking for work as a sales manager, but is forced to accept the position of hotel porter. Driven by festering class resentment, his first

supervisor, the stridently common Flo Palfrey (Carmel Myers), delights in the opportunity to lord it over the genteel Sorrell. He endures her petty humiliations with dignity, but rebuffs her advances and is fired. He finds another demeaning job and takes quiet pride in the fact that Kit is getting

a good education and growing up to be a fine young man (Nils Asther). Kit is in college studying medicine when Dora, a wealthy but shallow and unhappy woman, reappears. Eager to re-establish contact with her son now that he's on the road to success, Dora tries to buy his affection, taking him out

on the town, and introducing him to flashy women and hinting that one day her money could be his. But the firm moral grounding inherited from his father allows Kit to see her for the pathetic and grasping woman she is, and he refuses to be taken in. Kit eventually becomes a doctor and marries his

childhood sweetheart, Molly (Mary Nolan). Sorrell, meanwhile, finally succumbs to the toll his harsh life has taken. Old, in pain and terminally ill, he begs Kit for help. Unable to cure his father, Kit gives him a lethal dose of morphine. A prestige picture based on the enormously popular novel

by Warwick Deeping, SORRELL AND SON was partly shot on location in England. SORRELL AND SON was Swedish import Nils Asther's second Hollywood film, and ingenue Mary Nolan -- a Kentucky-born model and Ziegfield girl who first broke into movies in Germany -- made her American debut in the role of

Molly.
